Biography
Congresswoman Nikema Williams has been a fierce advocate for social justice, women and families throughout her political and professional career. Congresswoman Williams proudly serves Georgia’s Fighting Fifth Congressional District in her third term, uplifting the legacy of her friend, mentor and predecessor, the late Congressman John Lewis.
Congresswoman Williams always centers the voices of those who are most marginalized. She brings this concern to Congress having seen–and experienced–firsthand how women and people of color continue to fight for racial and social justice in our country.
A dedicated member of the exclusive House Financial Services Committee, she champions affordable housing, works to close the racial wealth gap, and fights for a financial system that prioritizes working families over corporate profits. In addition, as Whip of the Democratic Women’s Caucus, Congresswoman Williams leads the charge for reproductive freedom, standing firm in the belief people–not politicians–should have the final say in personal healthcare decisions.
As a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, the Progressive Caucus, and New Dems, Congresswoman Williams brings a bold, inclusive vision to her work. Whether advocating for economic justice, expanding voting rights, or addressing systemic inequities, she is unwavering in her commitment to deliver on the promise of America for everyone–no matter their ZIP code or bank account.
Congresswoman Williams is a proud graduate of Talladega College where she earned a degree in biology. While there, she became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Chi Chapter.
Above all, Congresswoman Williams is proud to be wife to her husband Leslie and mama to her son Carter. Her family keeps her grounded and fuels her passion to build a future where all children have the opportunity to thrive.
