Congresswoman Nikema Williams Invites Care Worker, Medicaid Recipient to Join Joint Congressional Session
(WASHINGTON) – Today, Congresswoman Nikema Williams (GA-05) announced that Alicia Cleveland, a member of the We Dream in Black initiative of the National Domestic Workers Alliance, will join her in Washington, D.C, for the Congressional Joint Session to highlight the vital importance of programs like Medicaid to working families and caregivers in the Fighting Fifth Congressional District and across the country.
Congresswoman Nikema Williams (GA-05) said:
“No one should ever have to worry that a president and his unelected billionaire friend may decide to take away the program they rely on to keep their son alive. Plenty of people say that Medicaid will not be touched, but we have seen the lines redrawn and the envelope pushed time and time again. Medicaid and SNAP are lifelines for working families and for caregivers. Care work makes all other work possible, and I’m fighting to protect Alicia and all care workers in the Fighting Fifth and across the country.”
Alicia Cleveland said:
“By joining Congresswoman Nikema Williams for the President’s joint congressional address, I am representing the hundreds of thousands of care workers across the country who care for others’ loved ones while struggling to meet our own families’ needs. So many of us care workers rely on Medicaid. Without Medicaid, I would not be able to afford my son’s medication or the specialists he needs, nor would I have been able to cover the surgeries my daughters needed to thrive. I hope my presence in the gallery Tuesday night will remind policymakers that they need to protect Medicaid in order to protect workers like me.”
