Congresswoman Nikema Williams Leads Georgia Congressional Delegation in Introducing Legislation Honoring John Lewis  

WASHINGTON – Today, Congresswoman Nikema Williams (GA-05) led the Georgia Congressional delegation in introducing legislation that would rename the Atlanta Main Post Office at 3900 Crown Road SW to the “John R. Lewis Post Office Building.” Congressman Buddy Carter (GA-01) is co-leading the legislation. Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock (D-GA) is introducing companion legislation to Congresswoman Williams’ original bill. To rename a United States Postal Service building, the entire Congressional delegation and both U.S. Senators representing the state where the building is located must introduce legislation that passes in both chambers before being signed into law by the President. 

“Congressman Lewis was my friend, mentor and predecessor and every day in Congress I am building on his legacy” said Congresswoman Williams. “The sacrifices Congressman Lewis made paved the way for me to serve Georgia’s Fifth Congressional District. Renaming the Fifth Congressional District’s main United States Post Office facility after Congressman Lewis ensures that he will continue to serve the people in perpetuity. I want to thank my colleagues on both sides of the aisle for recognizing the importance of Congressman Lewis’ legacy and cosponsoring my legislation.” 

“From his early days fighting segregation in Nashville to the Freedom Rides to his service in the halls of Congress, John Lewis dedicated his life to a more perfect union,” said Congressman Carter.  “I am proud to work with Congresswoman Williams and the entire Georgia Congressional Delegation to honor his service and sacrifice.  I cherish the talks we had walking to and from votes and will never forget John’s unyielding optimism and faith in the American Dream.”

In remembrance of his legacy, I will continue working to ensure all Georgians, and Americans, have an equal voice in our democracy and society.”
