Congresswoman Nikema Williams Leads Resolution Celebrating the Life and Legacy of the Late President Jimmy Carter
ATLANTA – Congresswoman Nikema Williams (GA-05) today reintroduced a House resolution honoring the life, achievements, and public service of former President Jimmy Carter. The resolution, co-led by Congressman Sanford Bishop (GA-02), commends President Carter for his humanitarian efforts, diplomacy, and advocacy, which spanned decades of service both in and out of elected office. Similar legislation honoring the late president is being led in the U.S. Senate by Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock (D-GA) and Senator Jon Ossoff (D-GA).
The House resolution highlights key moments from President Carter’s extraordinary life, including his early years growing up on a farm in Plains, Georgia, and his dedicated service in the U.S. Navy. It also acknowledges his time as Georgia’s 76th Governor, where he modernized state government and advanced civil rights.
Congresswoman Nikema Williams (GA-05) said:
“President Jimmy Carter’s life has been a testament to his own words: love God and love the person in front of you. He taught us that leadership is about putting people first, and our world is undeniably better because he chose to lead with love. My husband Leslie and I’s only son, Carter, was named in honor of President Carter, as a reminder of the humility, service, and compassion that defines his legacy. These are qualities I hope my Carter embodies throughout his life.
As the Congresswoman for the city that is home to the Carter Center and members of the Carter family, I introduced this resolution to reaffirm that we stand beside them—not just in this time of reflection, but long after the ceremonies have concluded. We will forever honor and love one of Georgia’s greatest leaders, James Earl Carter, Jr.”
Congressman Sanford Bishop (GA-02) said:
“Jimmy Carter lived a life of service to others. He was a compassionate leader who put his Christian values into action. I have been blessed to call him a friend and mentor for over 50 years and to be his Congressman for 32 of those years. He and his late wife, Rosalynn, were shining lights of faith, love, and devotion to each other and to humankind. Though he will be greatly missed in Plains, Georgia, and across the globe, we know that the world is a better place because of him. President Carter’s legacy will continue to inspire for generations to come.”
In addition to the co-lead, the resolution has 109 original co-sponsors, including the entire Georgia delegation with members such as Rep. Hank Johnson (GA-04), Rep. Barry Loudermilk (GA-11), Rep. Lucy McBath (GA-07), and Rep. Austin Scott (GA-08).
