Congresswoman Nikema Williams Secures Critical Increases in Funding Authorizations for Fifth District Water Infrastructure
WASHINGTON DC– This week, Congresswoman Nikema Williams (GA-05) secured increases in funding authorizations for vital water infrastructure in the Fifth District with the passage of the 2024 Water Resources Development Act (WRDA). This critical legislation will authorize essential investments in America’s water infrastructure. Each Congress must reauthorize WRDA legislation. Included in this year’s WRDA are three provisions championed by Congresswoman Williams which will increase allowable infrastructure investments in the Fifth District:
- Increases the amount of federal funding that can be directed towards water infrastructure in Atlanta to $100 million, up from $75 million.
- Increases the amount of federal funding that can be directed towards water infrastructure in East Point to $20 million, up from $15 million.
- Authorizes a flood risk management study for College Park to help keep families and communities safe in the face of extreme weather.
Congresswoman Nikema Williams (GA-05) said:
“Clean water, flood prevention, and resilient infrastructure aren’t luxuries—they are essentials every family in the Fighting Fifth deserves. By increasing the amount of federal funding that can be directed toward water infrastructure in Atlanta and East Point, we’re paving the way for greater investments to protect our health and environment. And by authorizing a flood risk management study for College Park, we’re taking a critical step to keep families safe and communities strong. These wins reflect our commitment to building a future where our neighborhoods are better equipped to weather any storm—literally and figuratively.”
Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said:
“I commend Congresswoman Nikema Williams for introducing this critical legislation that will provide a needed increase in water management funding authority for the City of Atlanta.
As we continue our collaborative work with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to modernize our aging water infrastructure, this bill plays a pivotal role in providing Atlanta with the federal funding flexibility it needs. In the days ahead, I look forward to continuing the strong partnership with our delegation to Move Atlanta Forward.”
College Park Mayor Bianca Motley Broom said:
“Congresswoman Williams has been a steadfast champion for the City of College Park and this latest funding is no exception. We are grateful for her leadership and her unwavering support.
We have seen more frequent and more intense flooding throughout the city and know how devastating it can be to residents and businesses. While those of us on the local level can identify these issues, it takes strong partnerships with our federal leaders to help solve them. With this funding, we look forward to being a more resilient community that can face our environmental challenges head on.”
