WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Nikema Williams issued the following statement on Reverend Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff becoming Members of the United States Senate:

“This is a momentous day in Georgia’s history, as Senator-elect Raphael Warnock will become the first Black man elected to represent Georgia in the Senate, and Senator-elect Jon Ossoff will become the first Jewish American to represent Georgia in the Senate and the upper chamber’s youngest Member. Congratulations to my friends, Senators-elect Warnock and Ossoff, on taking your well-deserved places in the United States Senate.

“Senator-elect Warnock embodies the spirit of Congressman John Lewis and continues the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, having campaigned on a message of inclusiveness and decency for all Georgians. Senator-elect Ossoff started his career as an intern in the late Congressman John Lewis’ office, and I am confident he will build on Congressman Lewis’ vision for America in the Senate.

“With Senators-elect Warnock and Ossoff in the Senate, we are one step closer to passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, which both leaders have already said they support. I am confident that the American values they possess will allow Congress to govern in the best interest of the American people, and we will get past the legislative gridlock we’ve seen in the past four years. It is time we redirect our focus toward getting our children safely back to school, providing COVID relief for individuals and families, and ensuring the health and safety of all people.”
