Congresswoman Nikema Williams Votes No on HR 6090
(WASHINGTON) – Today, Congresswoman Nikema Williams (GA-05), a member of the House Bipartisan Task Force for Combating Antisemitism issued the following statement after voting no on H.R. 6090:
“We are seeing a distressing rise in antisemitism in America. Republicans’ response to the urgency of the moment is passing a messaging bill that will not fulfill Congress’ moral obligation to keep people safe from hate.
“Instead of wasting time with performative bills, Congress needs to take up comprehensive legislation that will meaningfully make Jewish people safer. Republicans are using H.R. 6090 to mandate a definition to the Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights while simultaneously championing cutting 25 percent of the office’s funding; I signed a letter this week to double its funding. And in April, I secured increased funding for Nonprofit Security Grants for houses of worship to keep their congregations safe. Stopping antisemitism requires more than words, and I will never stop taking meaningful steps to keep Jewish people safe.”
