Congresswoman Nikema Williams Welcomes President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris to Georgia’s Fifth Congressional District, Calls for Action on Voting Rights

ATLANTA – Today, Congresswoman Nikema Williams (GA-05) issued the following statement, welcoming President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris to Georgia’s Fifth Congressional District:

“Georgia’s Fifth Congressional District is the cradle of the civil rights movement, and I am happy to welcome President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. Every day in Congress I am building on the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, my friend and predecessor John Lewis, and countless other civil rights icons who called the Fifth Congressional District home.

“This trip is about an action plan for voting rights. The House of Representatives did its part, passing both H.R. 1, the For the People Act and H.R. 4, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. But in the Senate, a procedural rule that has been used for centuries to deprive people of their rights is once again blocking voting rights. I look forward to hearing the President and Vice President’s plan for filibuster reform so the Senate can finally act on the will of the people and pass both the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and the Freedom to Vote Act.

“A wave of voter suppression is sweeping the nation like we have never seen before. Georgia, sadly, was only the first state to try and silence our voices. The two pieces of voting rights legislation currently in the Senate would give everyone free and fair access to the ballot—no matter your political party, no matter your ZIP Code. I know the President and Vice President are on the side of what is fair, right, and just. To stay on the right side of history they must detail an action plan for voting rights. There is no place more meaningful to do that than the Fifth Congressional District, and no time more meaningful than just before Martin Luther King Jr. Day.”
