Congresswoman Williams Joins House Democrats in Passing Historic Voting Rights Reforms
WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Nikema Williams today joined House Democrats in passing H.R.1, the For the People Act, a history-making piece of legislation that promotes democracy. The bill includes two amendments authored by Congresswoman Williams to assist people interfacing with HUD with voter registration information and making Election Day a federal holiday. “Making it easier – not harder – to vote should always be our main concern,” said Congresswoman Williams. “H.R.1 amplifies the voice of the people, breaks down barriers to voting and ensures the integrity of our elections. All people in this country deserve the right to free and fair elections, regardless of their zip code. “Passage of H.R.1 could not be timelier. This week, Georgia legislators unleashed a torrent of unprecedented voter suppression schemes to silence our voices, especially in communities of color. “I’m especially proud to support and pass H.R.1 serving in the district once held by my friend, predecessor, and mentor Congressman John Lewis. Mr. Lewis authored 300 pages of this bill and passage of HR1 uplifts his legacy and is the ‘Good Trouble’ he fought for his entire life.” |
