(WASHINGTON) – Today, Congresswoman Nikema Williams (GA-05) issued the following statement after avoiding an Extreme MAGA Republican shutdown of the federal government.

Congresswoman Nikema Williams (GA-05) said:

“Extreme MAGA Republicans’ infighting brought us to the brink of a government shutdown and they’re not done yet. They’re still marching toward a series of cruel, out-of-touch funding bills that would slash Social Security, criminalize abortion, and gut public education. House Democrats won’t let that happen.

“Passing legislation to keep the government open is one of the most fundamental jobs of Congress. That’s why I voted yes: to keep the federal government open for the American people and prevent food from being taken out of the mouths of women and children. It didn’t have to be this way. Republicans knew this day was coming. It took House Democrats to once again step up on behalf of the American people. House Democrats stood united all along, and will continue putting people over politics.”
